The HabiStat Dimming Thermostat is designed to control light bulbs, but can be used on almost any heating element. It provides a continuous variable supply of power to the heating element, working similar to a light dimmer or rheostat in the home. In incandescent light bulbs it is very important to use a variable power supply such as this to avoid lights turning on and off or flickering, which could be detrimental to reptile health.
The HabiStat Dimming Thermostat requires a minimum load of 40 watts, and has a maximum capacity of 600 watts.
The standard version can control a range of 18 – 32c (64-92F).
A high-range version is available for controlling higher temperatures from 26-40c (78-104F).
This product has a 5 year manufacturer’s guarantee.
Do I need to use a thermostat?
A thermostat is an essential piece of equipment and we highly recommend that every heating element in your enclosure is controlled by a thermostat. There are a variety of different thermostats available and we would be happy to give you a personal recommendation based on the size of your enclosure and the species inside it. Don’t hesitate to contact us on Facebook messenger, via email or over the phone for free advice on all aspects of reptile care.
Why do you recommend a thermostat?
Thermostats are essential for a variety of reasons.
Reptile health – The most critical reason is that having the correct temperatures in your enclosure is essential for reptile health. Reptiles are cold blooded and rely on the heat you are providing them for their health, including important functions like digestion. Incorrect temperatures (which includes too hot as well as too cold) can have serious and potential deadly impact upon reptile health. A thermostat is a critical tool for keeping your reptiles as healthy as possible.
Environmental reasons – The electricity that is used in powering devices takes a toll on the environment. By lowering our usage, we are more environmentally friendly. This can include things like turning light bulbs off in the home, using LED bulbs and watching our heating – but it can equally apply to our reptiles. Reptiles use more electricity than most pets due to the heating and lighting required. By using a thermostat, you ensure only the required amount of energy is expended.
Financial reasons – As above, by saving excess energy, you also cut down on your electricity bills, this can ultimately save you the cost of the purchase price of the thermostat and more.
