Heat mats produce ultra long wavelength infra red heat, allowing them to be placed underneath the substrate and radiate heat that is of a similar wavelength to the sun. They provide a localised heat for the area they are placed under, which allows the creation of a temperature gradient by placing them on one side of the enclosure. A temperature gradient is critical for thermoregulation in reptiles and the heat mat should be placed on the same side of the enclosure as other heating elements such as light bulbs or ceramic heaters. A heat mat gives off no light and thus can be used 24 hours a day and is an excellent option for night time heating as well as being inexpensive due to their low wattage. They should always be regulated with a thermostat, such as the HabiStat Mat Stat which will ensure the enclosure does not overheat as well as saving electricity.
This 6 x 11″ Habistat Heat Mat is available with an adhesive back, which makes it ideal for attaching to the outside of glass terrariums / aquariums, such as Exo Terra enclosures.
