Fruit fly (Drosophila hydei) are suitable for small species of invertebrate, amphibian, lizard or birds. They are flightless, so cannot fly, but can crawl and jump and can fit out of small holes. When you purchase fruit fly you will be purchasing one culture tub similar to how it is pictured. This will include food at the bottom and a mesh top to be escape proof. The fruit fly will hatch in this enclosure over approximately 2-3 weeks.
Fruit fly need to be kept in a cool location at room temperature. Cultures under 20c will produce slower, but still produce. Cultures over 29c will become sterile, so it is important not to heat them. There is no need to spray the fruit fly culture as it should have moisture inside, humidity should be around 65%. There is no need to gut load fruit fly or provide additional food in the culture tub.
